God has ordained all of us with a purpose, and how much effort we put into our various affairs is down to us. We can choose to leave work early with the job half-done or we can finish the job to the best of our ability. It may be harder but in the end you can know that you have showed God's glory in a positive light and people can say 'that person is a child of God and look at how successful they are'. You look at your work and have a sense of accomplishment.
A great example of a diligent worker was Nehemiah, who risked his life for the glory of God. Nehemiah served wine for the king of Persia and it was illegal to serve the king looking sad. God saw how much Jerusalem being destroyed troubled Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:4 - "When I heard this I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted and prayed to the God of Heaven") and so used the king to fund the rebuilding (Nehemiah 2:7).

Later, the people surrounding Jerusalem mocked Nehemiah and tried to stop the process (Nehemiah 4). Nehemiah had his hands full with allowing the people to protect themselves and keep building (Nehemiah 4:17). However, with perseverance and prayer, the building was complete in 52 days (Nehemiah 6:15).
So what can we learn from this? Nehemiah was a diligent worker who knew his God and had perseverance. So with those two things, anything is possible. If you show God you have the drive, He will provide the means of support and nothing can limit you!
