David is a "man after My Heart," saith the Lord. Why was this the case? David risked his life for animals - God's Creations! David believed all of God's Creation were equal. And if David would lay his life down for his helpless little lambs, he would certainly put his life down to save humans. No wonder God seeing this made Him say that David is a man after His own Heart.
We know God's knows the end before it has begun and called David to be the king of his people. David's first task as he was anointed was to see what his brother's were doing in the fields. He saw what happened to be a giant to be insulting his Creator, and the whole nation was terrified, including King Saul himself; just like the little lambs when they saw the dangerous lion.
David's reaction was to save the nation and put himself forward like in his instances with the sheep. He refused to let himself be terrified and instead decided to help save God's Creation. Taking it to the modern world, we can see David hated bullies, just like the lion bullying the poor, defenseless lambs. Now we know, how God saw the beginning from the end by saying David is a man after My own Heart.

"David asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to kill the Lord’s anointed king?”" - 2 Samuel 1: 14 NIRV
David had been on the run for most of his life because of one man - Saul. Immediately after the battle which resulted in Saul's death, an Amalekite traveled to David's dwelling and reported that he killed king Saul (this was a lie:
1 Samuel 31: 4 "Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me.”
But his armor-bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it.)"
The young mans lie had the fatal consequence of him losing his life. David was furious with him because he knew that no matter what Saul had done, he was God's anointed one. David himself passed up the perfect opportunity to get revenge on Saul when he was completely exposed and vulnerable.

But why did David choose to spare Saul?
David was a "man after God's heart" so he knew that he should leave Saul to God as He is the Supreme Judge and Saul was anointed. We should not interfere with God's enemies - He is more than capable of dealing with them Himself. Promotions do come from the Lord. This is one of the many reasons that God saw David as a fit ruler over Israel. David had been through many trials and tribulations but he never gave up his faith in God. All they did was train him and make him stronger. No wonder God referred to him as a "man after My heart".

Did you know that David had been looking after things for most of his childhood? God noticed that David was earnest and put his heart into everything that he did - especially taking care of the family sheep. If David would risk his life for his sheep, he definitely would risk his life for humans. Another thing would be the amazing mental strength David showed to resist temptation and stick to his beliefs. This showed great strength of character and made God choose him as a leader of His nation.

This is an amazing lesson we can learn from David!
Will you be earnest in everything you do?
